With 27,000 acres of water and up to 327 feet deep, Summersville Lake is the largest and deepest lake in West Virginia. Here you can explore the jagged sandstone cliffs and caverns along 60 miles of shoreline. Boat, fish, and swim in the crystal clear water of the lake, or camp under the stars.

1. Explore the Magnificent Shoreline in a Kayak or a Canoe

Glide over the calming waters of the lake and paddle to hidden coves and spectacular sandstone cliffs to explore the rugged shoreline from the water. There are also paddle boats and comfortable pontoon boats available to take family and friends on a relaxing cruise around the lake.

2. Hook That Big One

The excellent water quality and the tranquil surroundings make the lake a prime fishing spot. Here, because of the jagged cliffs, it is easier to fish off a boat to hook a prize catch. Fishermen regularly catch anything from bass, crappie, trout, and perch to sunfish,  walleye, and catfish.

3. Rock Climb the Cliffs

The sandstone cliffs, right on the edge of the water, offer an impressive range of grades for everyone, from beginners to hardcore climbers. Whippoorwill and Long Point are extremely popular and well known for long routes that offer excellent climbing. The climbs are influenced by the water level. During the summer months, it is too high to access many of the climbing areas. Once the level drops to below 1600 feet, you can climb to your heart’s content.

4. Scuba Dive in the Deepest Lake in the State

Diving and snorkeling are extremely popular here, where the sandstone cliffs plunge to over 100 feet below the surface. Dives offer interesting underwater rock formations, boulders, cliffs, and aquatic life, with swim-throughs 100 feet below the surface. The summer visibility is an average of 20 to 45 feet, with temperatures that range from 60°F to 80°F. Favorite diving spots are the grotto at Bubbles Cave and Long Point Cliffs.

5. Climb the Lighthouse Stairs

The lighthouse stands 104 feet tall on top of a hill, 2,164 feet above sea level. If you climb the 122 steps to the top of the lighthouse and stand on the deck, you will be rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view of the lake, the Gauley River, and the surrounding hills.

6. Camp Under the Stars

Summerville Lake Retreat is tucked away between tree-covered, rolling green hills on the shores of the lake. The site offers the ultimate camping experience and access to all the activities on and around the lake. Here you can pitch a tent in the forest, let your RV roll to one of the well-equipped sites, or stay in a luxury cabin. Best of all, your four-legged friend is welcome too.

With all the fun-filled activities in and around the lake, it is the perfect getaway to escape to. Call Northside Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT today for the best vehicles and the lowest prices in town.
